How much would I owe if I did not pay by April 15th?

If you don’t pay the taxes you owe to the IRS by April 15, the IRS charges penalties and interest, and they can add up fast. Here’s a breakdown:

1. Failure-to-Pay Penalty

  • 0.5% of the unpaid taxes per month (or part of a month) the tax remains unpaid after April 15, up to a maximum of 25%.
  • If you're on an installment agreement, the rate drops to 0.25% per month.

2. Interest Charges

  • The IRS charges interest on unpaid taxes, compounded daily.
  • The rate is currently 8% annually (as of early 2025), but this can change quarterly.
  • Interest starts the day after the due date (April 16) and keeps running until the balance is paid in full.

3. Failure-to-File Penalty (if you also didn’t file by April 15 or file an extension)

  • Much worse than the failure-to-pay penalty: 5% of the unpaid taxes per month, up to 25% total.
  • If both the failure-to-file and failure-to-pay penalties apply in the same month, the failure-to-file penalty is reduced by the failure-to-pay amount. So, you’d pay 4.5% + 0.5% = 5% total per month.

To Avoid the Worst:

  • File your return (or extension) by April 15 to avoid the big failure-to-file penalty.
  • Even if you can’t pay, pay as much as you can and consider setting up a payment plan
